“Meditate, meditate, meditate peace is obtained, Worry and anguish is expelled from the body.” -Guru Arjan Dev Ji

“Meditate, meditate, meditate peace is obtained, Worry and anguish is expelled from the body.”

-Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru and the first Sikh Martyr, was a calm and meditative heart yet immensely powerful.

In the month of June 1606, a Mughal emperor Jahangir ordered to torture and kill Guru Ji. They made the Guru sit on a hot cauldron, poured hot sand on him, kept him bereft of water and food, and threw him in boiling water.

Still, Guru Ji endured the agony calmly, meditating, “Tera kiya meetha laage…” (whatever you do God, tastes sweet).

This Shabad by Guru Ji teaches everyone to follow the orders of Waheguru Ji and stay calm through all situations.

On the fifth day of pain, Guru Arjan Dev Ji went for a dip in the river to never return. No one can imagine the pain of Guru Ji.

The Power of a Calm Mind

If you learn about Guru Ji’s life, you will feel nothing but inspiration.

He wrote poetry in The Guru Granth Sahib and compiled the poems of Vaishnav saints to preserve their amazing legacy. He also put efforts to build the beautiful and the most respectful place, Golden Temple in Amritsar. His preaching led to his martyrdom ultimately.

All his efforts during his life till the very end are highly inspiring. At times, as a seeker, meditate on him and contemplate his martyrdom. You will be moved to tears by the magnitude of his incredible personality.

Immerse deep into it, you will see Guru Sahib burning on the hot plate, yet in a meditative state. Guru Ji willingly took his misery as a gift, and this gave him profound peace and strength.

Accept Your Pain with Dignity

While it is true that no one voluntarily accepts suffering, it is also true that you cannot do anything about it. Suffering is inevitable in your life; sometimes it is outside our control.

But if you must suffer anything – like humanity is suffering right now due to the pandemic – accept it with dignity. You will be able to deal with it effectively. You can fight any situation bravely with a meditative heart.

Further, look at the life of Guru Ji to understand the power of a calm and meditative personality. It takes immense strength to lead such a high life. You are organizing langars (free kitchens) for hundreds and thousands of needy people and holding discourses. You are attracting devotees towards you by expressing the noble thoughts in a soulful way. And in the end bear the intense pain with such dignity and leave this world on your own terms.

That is what we can learn from Guru Ji – to accept the challenges as a gift and deal with them bravely. Once you can do that, you get a new perspective on life and become strong to face even tougher challenges.

Therefore, meditate on Guru Arjan Dev Ji for inspiration. If you can do that, no challenge in life can make you fearful. You will be able to tackle any crisis bravely and win ultimately.
