Each year the appearance day of Goddess Sita, the divine consort of Lord Rama, is celebrated as Sita Navami or Sita Jayanti across the country. In Bihar’s Sitamarhi District the festival is celebrated with full zeal because of the Devi’s association with the place. The Ramayana states that Goddess Sita is the daughter of Mother Earth (Bhoomi Maa) and the legend behind her appearance is truly Divine. Sita is an embodiment of an ideal married woman.
On this day, Hindu women fast and offer prayers to the Goddess for their husbands’ longevity and well-being just as Devi Sita used to do for Lord Rama.
