Practice Humility in an Unforgiving World!

“Humility is a supernatural virtue. Make it your constant companion despite harshness all around. The attribute will make you feel free & light even in the most complex situations of life.”

It’s a harsh world with cut-throat competition everywhere. Resentment, suspicion, hatred, apathy, etc. are part of life. In such a circumstance, being humble seems like an old-fashioned virtue. But it’s not.

It’s nevertheless a beautiful attribute that ensures your happiness forever. And it’s possible to practise humility in almost all circumstances. It’s not at all a hard attribute to develop, although it’s considered a tough trait because it has to begin from accepting that you could be wrong sometimes.

And many people may find it challenging. Still, anyone may cultivate humility as a key trait of their personality by-

  1. Developing a habit of understanding others’ point of view

Value others’ emotions and allow them to be heard. Listen to others enabling them to express themselves. It is a powerful way to develop humility. Just listening and responding in a positive way will make a big difference.

  1. Practising mindfulness meditation

An integral part of mindfulness is ‘acceptance’ without becoming judgmental. And a key element of humility is accepting yourself with all your drawbacks, rather than despising yourself for your own personality traits. But that doesn’t mean you should not try to improve.

Once you start working on improving yourself, you’ll feel that you are becoming humble in the entire process.

  1. Seeking help when you need it!

Humility also lies in understanding when we need help, and being able to seek it from those who are in a position to help. Taking pride in your work is alright, but sometimes there is no harm in being at the receiving end and taking help from our Guru.

Our Guru is always willing to help if we know how to seek help.

  1. Practising positive affirmation

Tell this to yourself that in life, I have to stay humble in all situations. So, etch it in your mind firmly that whatever the situation may come, I will remain sweet and modest. We all are God’s children, and how is God? He is the ocean of humility. He is humble and sweet.

And so, being children of God, how can you forget your own humility.  Remind yourself that I am also sweet and humble and so I will act accordingly.

  1. Reacting wisely

How you would react in a particular situation, it should not be decided by the situation; rather it must be decided by you only. It has to be decided by your own inner knowledge, approach and conscience.

If someone has been unfair to you or spoke badly about you, in such situations you have to check your mind- are you are also talking to them in a bad manner?

Understand this with an example.

When a child comes home crying after being scolded by a teacher, what do you do? You listen to his plight and console him. Likewise, if your mind has felt bad about something, make your mind understand and re-condition your mind to face such situations while staying humble.

You can do this by not dragging things in your mind. If an argument ensues at your home, do not stop talking to your family members. In such situations say, I am not going to spill out the bitterness and nor am I going to let it disturb my inner peace.

Hence, keep in your mind that anger, hatred, jealousy, competition, etc. are a part of life. They are inevitable, but how to react to them, totally depends upon you. While reacting, keep the above points in your mind and practice humility in all circumstances. You’ll find that your inner peace is enhancing naturally and you are living a happier and more fulfilling life.
