In an attempt to improve their lives, everyone makes New Year’s resolutions when January arrives. But most of the time they forget them by February, March or April and get disappointed.
Making resolutions shouldn’t have to be a futile exercise. You can accomplish them if you’re realistic, diligent and know how to achieve them.
And if you are still in the process of deciding on a New Year resolution, here are a few ideas.
• Daily meditation and Yoga practice
• Offer prayers daily
• Upskilling
• Starting a blog
• Sponsor/educate a child
• Staying active on social media
• Taking steps to save the environment
• Learn a foreign language
• Attain a relationship goal
• Help the needy
• Don’t waste food anymore
• Achieve a fitness goal
• Go for higher education
• Waking up early in the morning
• Take business to new heights
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene always…and more.
There could be limitless possibilities here for life is a long journey and there are a lot of things to do.
Moreover, this is true that a lot of people make resolutions but don’t stick to them. Have you ever given it a thought, why do they fail in maintaining that approach and attitude? There could be various reasons. Sometimes, resolutions fail to keep them motivated over the time.
For example, ‘eating healthy’ could be a nice resolution, but it will lack depth if not linked with a broader vision. WHY you want to eat healthy? You must develop a vision related to it.
Now let’s see how it is possible to fulfil New Year resolutions.
1. Give Your Resolution a Purpose
A purpose is your reason for doing something and mostly, it is linked to positive outcomes. People with a sense of purpose deal with life’s hardships effectively and are also good at sticking with the resolutions.
So, if ‘staying fit through Yoga’, is your resolution, link it with a purpose. Why staying fit is essential for you. Is it related to any job aspiration?
Once your purpose is confirmed, you will do whatever it takes to accomplish what you have wished.
2. Move Ahead Without any Self-interest
Consider who or what will be positively impacted by your resolution. You may think beyond your personal gains. Try to be a part of something greater than the self. Say, I will take my business to new heights to give a good education to street children who cannot afford that. I will take part in ‘Save the Environment’ initiatives for my forthcoming generations. You may think in such a way and move ahead to achieve your goal with a neutral spirit. A superior motivation always helps when things get cloudy during the pursuit of a goal.
So, try to think about the bigger picture and consider whose life you are going to change with your resolution.
3. When Required, Ask for Help and Support
We are humans and so we may get weak sometimes while moving forward to achieve a goal. If you feel that you need a handholding to keep moving, don’t hesitate in asking for support. There’s no harm in accepting help from friends, family and even strangers. Search for someone who can strengthen your resilience to manage stress caused by any resolution. Talk to your elders and Guru. They can offer a helping hand.
Just don’t quit at any cost.
Final Thoughts
Stay strong and give your resolution a purpose and stay away from stress, even if a ‘meditation regime’ gets hampered or you ate a mouth-watering junk food at a party or couldn’t upskill yourself.
Ask for help from elders & Gurus to stay hopeful always.
Have a blessed year 2021 replete with purpose-filled times!
