The Spiritual Quest of a Poet | Kabir Das Jayanti

Kabir has found that the importance of Guru is more than even God. Such was his respect for the Guru and that became possible on account of his deep spiritual quest.

The Spiritual Quest of a Poet

There is a deep thirst in most people to understand the meaning of life. This desire gives rise to a spiritual quest motivating them to embark on a spiritual journey. Through this journey, they want to discover who they truly are.

And this spiritual journey is a very individual quest that helps in deepening the insight into life.

It was sometime in mid 15th century that the poet-saint Kabir was born in Varanasi. There are multiple legends about his life and most of his life stories revolve around his spiritual quest.

He did not undertake any formal education. All his poetries seem like a natural flare-up of emotions. And his verses are full of weaving metaphors since he was a weaver by profession.

Reflect upon his poems. You’ll find the essence of deep spiritual truth in all of them.

Kabir’s Search for a Guru

In his initial years, Kabir was hugely dissatisfied with a normal life. There was a spiritual thirst in his heart and he was consistently on a spiritual journey to seek the Truth. He was in search of the meaning of his life and for that, he was seeking a Guru.

The search ended on Guru Ramananda, a great saint in Varanasi. Initially, Guru Ramananda did not agree to consider him his disciple. Due to the young poet’s insistence, Guru Ramananda accepted him as his disciple.

After that happening, the life of Kabir changed completely. He started the spiritual journey that awakened his senses to ordinary things and circumstances around him, especially God, nature, wisdom and Guru.

He became a master at expressing life’s deeper questions in a few lines or Dohas. Throughout his poetic works, you can find the essence of ordinary day-to-day life filled with philosophical knowledge.

He took on everyday situations and made them intensely meaningful in a social and spiritual context.

He specially wrote beautiful verses on Guru, one of the most famous among them is –

गुरु गोविंद दोऊ खड़े, काके लागूँ पाँय

बलिहारी गुरु अपने, गोविंद दियो मिलाय

“A Guru and the God are standing before me, who to greet first?

Guru deserves the first right as it is only because of Guru that I am able to see God.”

Kabir has found that the importance of Guru is more than even God. Such was his respect for the Guru and that became possible on account of his deep spiritual quest.

From Poetry to Spirituality

By embarking on a spiritual journey, Kabir attained self-realization. He decided to go on a spiritual journey in order to look into profound questions about life and mundane situations around it. The journey helped him to better understand his own purpose in life.

He intensively studied the nature of truth and became at peace with himself. He combined his vision with his profession and so his work gave him the fruits of the passionate meditation of his heart.

In the course of time, a poet turns into a spiritual leader at India’s spiritual centre, Varanasi.  He wrote amazing couplets that are spiritually rich, beautiful and mystical.

And this was the power of his spiritual quest.
