Indian Diaspora; Promoting ‘Indian Values’

Indian Diaspora; Promoting ‘Indian Values’

Indian Diaspora

India is a land of Values. These values are the reason of India’s massive popularity abroad.

Values including Unity in Diversity, Yoga, Ayurveda, Meditation, Vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the whole world is a family), Atithi devo bhav (guest is God), Spiritual path, family values, and Guru-Shishya tradition, have many admirers in foreign countries.

And they are widely known because of Indian Diaspora.

Diaspora, i.e. spread of people to different countries from their own country, plays a great role in enhancing any country’s cultural riches. This is true in context of India as well.

When Indians move abroad, they carry Indian values with them and spread them beautifully without hurting others’ sentiments.

And this turns the Indian Diaspora into a unique force.

The influence of Indian Diaspora

The Indian diaspora is one of the largest in the world in terms of numbers and so the influence they make is also impressive.

Put together all the major festivals in the world and you still won’t get close to the number of festivals that are celebrated in India. And when someone goes to a foreign land, he takes the flavor of these festivals as well.

When someone moves abroad, he naturally misses his culture and traditional festivities. Such nostalgia and a race of longing in the heart gives birth to many beautiful celebrations on foreign soil and it helps people understand our core values.

Swami Vivekananda; the Torchbearer

When Vivekananda went to Chicago, his talks on ‘Vedanta’ fascinated people from all over the world. It was not less than a cultural and spiritual revolution. It suddenly put a brake on the notion in the West that India is just a land of diverse religions and superstition. His short address in Chicago is still remembered, over 125 years later, as a historic event when it comes to promotion of Indian values.

India is now seen as a land with a rich civilization. Thanks to the spread of Indian values abroad. And this transportation of Indian values is not a new phenomenon.

In ancient times, traders from India went to foreign lands in search of fresh business opportunities. Wherever the merchants went, they established strong cultural links with those places while spreading their own values.

Kudos to India’s Cultural Ambassadors

The Indian Diaspora therefore is not less than Cultural & Value ambassadors. Many of them are on a spiritual mission as well who spread the message of peace & spirituality on the foreign land. There are many examples and the most popular example is Srila Prabhupada who travelled around the United States to impart his teachings related to Lord Krishna.

The way he spread the value of pure devotion in a foreign land is simply matchless. His legacy is still visible and its impact is well-known.

Kudos to all such Indians and NRIs who are playing a great role in spreading the essence of Indian art, culture, tradition, values, and spirituality on foreign soils.

More power to them!
