Guru Purnima: An Event Celebrating the Glory of Guru

निवर्तयत्यन्यजनं प्रमादतः स्वयं च निष्पापपथे प्रवर्तते।

गुणाति तत्त्वं हितमिच्छुरंगिनाम् शिवार्थिनां यः स गुरु र्निगद्यते।।

Literal Meaning: One who stops others from making mistakes, who himself walks on the path of sinlessness, who enlightens those wishing for good and welfare, is called a Guru.

In the cultural and spiritual traditions of India, the figure of a Guru holds immense significance. Guru is a Sanskrit word that means the dispeller of darkness. So a guru is not merely a teacher. He is more than that. He is a guiding light, a treasure of wisdom, and an excellent mentor.

Who Actually is a Guru?

A true guru is a person of high values who leads by example. He instills the values of integrity, modesty, and love in society through his conduct and teachings. Under his tutelage, his disciple achieves self-realisation and enlightenment. In the company of such a guru, the disciple overcomes ignorance and advances in his spiritual journey. 

About Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is an auspicious day that celebrates the glory of our great gurus. Every year, on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Ashadha (June-July), millions of people honour their gurus and express their gratitude to them. Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains all celebrate this important event with profound devotion and faith.

The Significance of Guru Purnima

In the yogic tradition, Shiva is considered the Adiyogi, which means the first yogi. Guru Purnima is the day when Adiyogi, who was meditating on the Himalayas, became the Adiguru (the first guru) to the Saptarishis (seven seers), namely Atri, Bharadwaj, Gautama, Jamadagni, Kashyapa, Vashishta, and Vishvamitra, around 15,000 years ago. These seven seers spread the knowledge around the world that Adiguru imparted to them. Since then, the day has been celebrated as an occasion dedicated to paying respect to the gurus. The event is also known as Vyasa Purnima, which marks the birth anniversary of Maharshi Ved Vyasa – the author of the epic Mahabharata and the compiler of the Vedas and Puranas.

The Guru-Shishya Parampara

The age-old tradition of guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) is an inseparable part of ancient Indian civilisation. Through this system, spiritual wisdom has been transmitted across generations for thousands of years. The event is a reminder for the gurus to fulfil their responsibilities towards their disciples by passing on their correct teachings to them. For the disciples, it serves as a day to make their commitment towards the dissemination of wisdom to the coming generations.

Gurudev: My Guiding Light 

I am extremely grateful to have Gurudev as my guiding light. Under his divine guidance, I have evolved immensely. The values of humility, empathy, love, and respect he instilled in me have enabled me to feel and address the sufferings of others. The seeds of wisdom he sowed in me have kept me composed amid problems. The confidence I gained in his company has made me walk with confidence in challenging circumstances. With his practical advice, I deal with any situation in a more pragmatic way. I surrender myself at the lotus feet of my Sadguru.

A person with the grace of a guru achieves anything in the world. With his profound knowledge and wise guidance, he empowers his disciple to face life’s battles courageously.
