Earth Day Special – Sustainable Living for a Sustainable Environment

An article published in January 2023 reported per decade increase of 0.08° C in earth’s temperature since 1880 which rose to 0.18° C per decade since 1981. Another data published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has estimated that this will rise up to 1.5°C between the period of 2030 and 2035. These facts are alarming.

There have been many factors that have led to the degradation of our planet. Unrestrained human activities have immensely damaged the environment at a whooping rate. Water, soil & air pollution, deforestation, overpopulation; these are some of the major factors responsible for the massive climate change.

The objective of the event

Considering the imminent threat of global warming, environmental organisations throughout the world have suggested many ways to fight this menace. From promoting general awareness towards environmental protection to making people sensitive enough to live in a responsible manner, they are leaving no stone unturned to meet the goal of saving the earth.

Earth Day is a part of these initiatives that started in the year 1970. Since then, it is being celebrated each year on April 22 across the world. The objective of the event is to make people aware and sensitive towards the conservation and preservation of our planet.

We can contribute in this mission by adopting these simple sustainable habits and also encouraging others to do so.

  1. Planting More Trees – Deforestation is a major challenge. Planting more and more trees is one of the most important steps towards environmental protection when nearly 15 billion trees are cut down every year.
  2. Use Renewable Energy – Instead of using traditional form of energy, opt for wind or solar energy. This will not only be a safer and wiser option but will also reduce your electricity bills.
  3. Wise Use of Resources – We should be mindful of using water, soil, electricity or any other natural and man-made resources to stop their wastage.
  4. Switch to Fuel-Efficient Vehicles – Fully electric or hybrid vehicles are the answers to continuously growing air pollution. Apart from saving money, it will also lessen our dependency on fuel.
  5. Go for Energy-Efficient Appliances – Buying energy star rating electrical appliances is another smart way to minimise greenhouse gas emission.
  6. Turn vegetarian – A 2021 study reported that global meat industry was responsible for emitting about 60% of greenhouse gases from food production. In such scenario, it is better to go vegetarian to help the planet survive global warming.
