The Importance of Knowing Your Culture & Heritage

there is nothing wrong with enjoying diversity but along with that you should also understand your own culture & heritage and take steps to preserve them.

Culture and heritage play an important role in our lives. Countries and societies use diverse methods to preserve their culture and heritage. Some document it through architectural skills, some write manuscripts in great detail while some record it digitally.
This is because as a society we understand the importance of documenting our culture and heritage.

The Importance of Preserving the Culture

People document their past and preserve that to make sure their culture is clearly understood by the generations to come. Otherwise, a lot of valuable experience and rich wisdom can vanish.
Moreover, seeking information about your own heritage is important as it gives you a chance to understand the traditions that are specific to your ancestors.
By doing this, you will gain a historical perspective of your family & society.

How to Preserve Your Culture

There are various ways.
Cherish Your Cultural Signatures
Each culture has its own music, literature, festivals, clothing, food habits, and other unique characteristics. Use and enjoy them often in your day-to-day life. Celebrate major holidays with family, friends and relatives; organize your cultural events and cook traditional cuisines by taking guidance from the elders in your family. When you’ll prepare such food you will realize that it’s actually your comfort food and a source of family pride.

Know About Age-Old Religious Traditions

Religion plays an important role when it comes to making people aware of their culture and tradition. Whether or not you are deeply religious, you should read sacred texts often to understand your culture. Religion impacts language, personal behavior, and customs. Become familiar with your religion, understand its diverse aspects, and pass it on as well. It gives you a cultural identity that should be preserved.

Talk in Your Native Language

Right now many languages are at risk of extinction. This is because no one uses them anymore. If you know one of them and if it is your native language (mother tongue), motivate others in your family and relationships to talk more in this language. If you know people who share your culture and tradition, but speak in a different language, try to talk to them in your own native language. This will help in preserving an integral aspect of your culture.

And When in a Foreign Country

If you live in a foreign country, adjust to the local culture but try not to lose your family traditions. You should make a balance in both cultures while maintaining your own identity. And for that keep talking to your family & friends at home, join local groups linked to your culture and keep celebrating your country’s festivals, of course by adhering to local laws.
Always remember, there is nothing wrong with enjoying diversity but along with that you should also understand your own culture & heritage and take steps to preserve them.
