Bells: Creating the Waves of Bliss!

Bell is an integral part of many ceremonies and rituals across religions, faiths and geographical locations. You see the bell hanging at the entrance of the temple. Santa Claus too jingle the bells that announces his arrival. In Buddhism, the bell is an important sacred object. Bells, gongs or singing bowls tend to have great impact on moods, anxiety, pain and spiritual well being.

The ringing of the bell produces an auspicious sound. The bell produces a blissful and lasting sound which lasts at least for seven seconds in echo mode. That sharp sound tends to heal the seven energy centers or chakras in your body. It connects your soul with the delightful sound that awakes you. The sound of the bell empties your brain of all thoughts and has the therapeutical affect. Bells are the sign of happiness and progressive energy.

What is ringing of the bells?

In Hindu practice, it produces the sound Om, the universal sound. The ringing of the bell during prayer is said to help one clear the mind of mundane thoughts and focus on the deity or reflect and meditate. The bell is rung before the start of ‘Arti’ to inform devotees to reach temple for arti’s darshan. During arti the bell’s auspicious sound wards off negative vibes and forces. The bell’s sound has the power to focus the wandering mind on the deity by clearing all other thoughts. The bell’s blissful sound has the effect of spiritually boosting a person.

Similarly in Buddhism, the bells are rung to evoke protection from deities. The sound of bells symbolizes the voice of the Buddha, equaling the sound of the heavenly law, or “Dharma”.

In Christianity, the jingling of the bells depicts the arrival of the Santa. It further goes on to symbolize the birth of christ.

What according to Agama Sastra?

According to Agama Sastra, the bell is used for keeping evil forces away and the sound of the bell is pleasant to the God. There are other theories too, the sound of bells clears our mind. It helps us stay sharp and keep our full concentration on devotional purpose. The sound helps to wade away the demonic forces and brings in the positivity.

The ringing of the bell or the gong has always been symbolized as an act of seeking attention to channelize the energy of an individual in one direction both literally and spiritually. Bell is not just a metal object hanging at the entrance or on the top of tower but a blissful awakening wave.
